Children in the US go to bed hungry every night. Our educational system is in the toilet. Parenting classes are not required at any level. Predators abound. Those who hurt or murder children are not punished as severely as if they had harmed adults.

Who will really protect them??

I DO protect my children and grandchildren! I'm talking about those who are abused and mistreated. Read the whole question!!

Also, I agree that we don't "look out for the little guy", but I surely don't think that the reason is "liberalism". (A good dictionary might be in order--look up "liberal")

Politicians are supposed to deal with national issues. The health and welfare of our next generation IS a national issue! Remember...they will be YOUR doctors, caregivers, "deciders" when YOU are old and grey.....

Yeah, cosidering there is a huge movement on the part of the religious right, to protect the unborn, one would think that they would also be concerned about children once they are born, one can only dream. So far the money spent on the Iraq war would have paid for a universal health care system twice over with money left over to fix education.

Sadly, there are many politicians and professionals who actively seek to protect child predators or other perverts. For example, the ACLU defends child predators. Also, it is legal to kill children if they're in the womb (abortion). This affects the culture at large. Children are seen as property in many cases or second-class citizens. The problem is the liberalism of the past has been replaced by a modern, selfish version of liberalism. No one sticks up for the little guy anymore (the unborn, the poor, disabled, old, etc)

Update:

In response to the original poster: "The ACLU protects everyone." Anyone who protects child predators or perverts is severely misguided in my book.

This is something I ask all the time. We should ALL be concerned with this. No child should ever go hungry. Kids are not allowed to be kids anymore it seems. A good example is a school in CA where they have banned cupcakes as a birthday celebration in elementary schools, instead insisting on carrot sticks and celery as a substitute!! Our children seem disposable, judges giving 6 months to a pedophile who had molested a little girl for 2 years...another giving a pedophile probation because he was "too short" and would have a difficult time in jail...I wonder how tall his poor, defensless little victim was? The ACLU? Sorry, but one of their own, the past president of the VA chapter was arrested for possessing thousands of images of very violent rape against little girls, what have we heard aabout that? That should be headline news, but I guess something like the Anna Nicole story takes precedence. The ACLU is in part to blame for what we have become.
This is probably the number one issue that needs to be addressed today, and yet it seems like a non issue to so many. Seriously, I am working as much as time will allow me to find ways that I can help. We all need to. Thanks for bringing this up.

One, children do not vote nor do they have millions to donate to a politician's campaign. Another reason is the welfare of children is not as profitable as sending men and women to another country to die in an unpopular war. It also seems that our politicians do not have the ability to foresee the future. For example, they endorse the space program and throw millions of dollars into it without considering the importance of the educational system. As the current employees and astronauts get older and move towards retirement, they will have to be replaced. There is a lot of complicated math and science involved in space exploration and the current educational system is turning out graduates who have trouble with the basic math needed to balance a checkbook or make change. How could they be expected to handle the complicated math and physics involved in space exploration or the math and technical skills needed to service and maintain the military current weapon systems??? Our politicians seem to do a lot of putting the cart in front of the horse.
I also think our politicians do not get out into the community and visit playgrounds, schools, and after school programs. They would find out a lot of things that don't get discussed at White House dinners or Georgetown cocktail parties. They would find out that babies are having babies which would immediately suggest that parenting classes are in order. They would also find out that there are still children being raised by the TV and Internet. Bush's budget cut funding to community programs which leaves children to create their own fun and without the guidance of positive adults, children will put themselves in harm's way making them vulnerable to the scum that preys on them.
In short it is tunnel vision and no eye towards the future which leads politicians to dismiss the welfare of children as unimportant. All we can do is hope that in 2008 that "No Child Left Behind" will be something more than a phrase that sounds good.

I hope I don't come of as heartless tword children and people in general but this mind set that it should be governments responsibility to take care of our children scares the hell out of me. And most of the answers scare me about as much. You are right about child molesters getting lesser sentences all the time. It's interesting that if you look up the profile of some of the judges who let these monster off with little or no punishment are liberal in ideology. they are the ones that don't believe in capitol punishment but believe in abortion on demand. If the liberals who run the democrat party get their universal health care. You will see how expensive "free" health care will be to those of us who work.Look at education....one person said Bush doesn't care and won't spend the money it needs. Nothing could be further from the truth we spend more on education now then anytime in history. the reason it is in bad shape is because most of the money never gets to where it is needed! It's swallowed up in big bureaucracies. Government is the WORST place to try and run things like education health care. Government was formed to first of all protect us against enemies with a strong military and pass the laws that we the people want that we vote for. Now government is a monster that wants to micro manage our lives. And to do that it takes lots of money where does that money come from? You and me in taxes higher and higher taxes. the liberals think they can tax us into prosperity, that's about as possible as a man standing in a large bucket trying to pull himself off the ground by the handle. It's impossible. No what we need is less government in our lives less taxes so we have the money to take care of ou children. Americans are a generous people at heart. If someone needs help let that help come on a local level. The less amount of hands the money goes through to help someone the more there will be to go where it is needed. The way our government is now it is truly the tail wagging the dog. ok off my soap box. I love children I love people and only want the best for all of us. And letting government run our lives will only bring more misery. peace...

Amazing isn't it? Add your statements to the fact that millions are without health and dental care. Our elected officials really don't care about adults any more than they care about children though. The only thing about adults is that they are dumb enough to reelect them every couple of years or so. What we need are more political parties, true election reform, abolition of special interest lobyists, and more concerned Americans voicing their concern and contempt for "the system."

Bush and company don't care about poor people or their kids. Just look at the pitiful response to Hurricane Katrina. New Orleans looked like some third world country on tv but Bush sat on his *** for days. Last year's election hopefully will help refocus our attention on social and economic problems at home.

Because the government rarely thinks about those who are less fortunate than them.

On the matter of child healthcare, Bush avoided that topic altogether at a governor's conference last week when it was brought up--and instead--urged all governors to embrace his health tax credit plan.

Democrats address these issues all the time. National health care, more money for schools, Planned parenthood (Always apposed by the right) isn't just about abortion, it has classes on parenting teaching and protecting our children.
