i would go with a warrior, a monk, a black mage and a red mage
warriors are very expensive to equip. keep in mind that you have the option of a weapon in each hand, if they're one handed weapons
a monk. be careful to check his stats evey time he gets a level. he might be have a higher attack with NO WEAPONS equipped. cheap, and good damage
black mage. not just for the black magic, which is decent damage, later, but they can wield bow and arrows. they do surprisingly decent damage. always keep in the back row!
red mage. you won't be able to use the cure spell often in the beginning of the game, because you'll only have like 2-4 level one spell slots. so you might as well get a guy that can equip that white magic, and also do damage. red mages can wield swords, and if they have two one handed weapons, they can dual wield as well
----------
classes i didn't choose, and why
white mages. they don't do much damage, and early in the game, they get like 4-6 level 1 slots. being able to use cure 6 times instead of the red mage's 3-4 times doesn't make that much of a difference. after you get a nice amount of spell slots, this class is more useful, because it can equip certain white magics that red mages can't
thieves are good if you want to run away a lot, they're much more likely to be able to run, but for newer players, i would avoid, for now. a large portion of the items that monsters have in the beginning aren't really that helpful, because they can cost damage in their acquisition

It really depends on how you want to play the game. If you want to have an easier time go with a white or red mage, black mage, monk and warrior. This way you have mages to heal injured members and also the heavy hitters to do damage.
If you want to have a harder game don't use any magic users. With this strategy you must depend on recovery items and being able to kill the monsters quickly.
Hope this helps, but the most fun with FF3 is to try your own combos. Happy gaming.

When I started out, I basically chose the same job they showed in the introduction (white mage, black, warrior, and red mage). Of course, later you're going to get better jobs so that's a starter.

always have a healer (white mage)
monks are good. warriors are the strongests out of those(specially if you make ingus one) and theifs steal things but cant guard. red mage can use low lever light and dark magic. black mage can use dark. monks are like ninjas they can retaliate attacks and are quite strong.
i would have white mage, warrior, black mage and a monk.
hope this helps!
