I know that I am supposed to run away, but I have no idea how and my party keeps getting anihalated! Help!

it's not like some other games, where you hold in the L and/or R buttons
it's more like the first final fantasy. where the box comes up when it's someone's turn, keep pushing "down" until you see "run"
it doesn't automatically run, instead, it makes "run" the person's wish. that is, they'll try to run when it's their turn.
some classes have a harder time running. a warrior that has so much equipment, he'll weigh more, and will have a hard time running. thieves are excellent at running, speed being their game.
just keep trying to run, you'll get it

Have all your members use the run option by scrolling down on your list of actions. do not use the fight action. By doing this you should get out of there before the dragon kills your whole party.
If you have a thief you'll have a better chance to get out.
