I'd like some advice. I work at a place, with about 9 other people on my shift. I work from 7:00 pm to midnight. I'm the only one that comes in at 7:00.

Tonight, our roads were terribly icy. I was on my way to work, and slipped into the ditch. Someone stopped and gave me a ride to work. On our way there, at about 7:05, I saw several of my coworkers cars traveling away from work. Apparently, my boss had decided to close the place down at around 7:00.

Ok. Considering, that I have never A. been late for work, or B. not called in if I couldn't be there, is it too much to ask that my boss think of me when I hadn't come in or called in by 7:00? Especially since he knew the roads were treacherous? Like maybe he could have waited 10 minutes to see if I was okay. Maybe he could have had some common courtesy and called my house to let someone know that I was possibly dead in the ditch somewhere? Should I say anything to him or someone or just accept the fact that no one cares if I'm dead

I don't need a babysitter, but I just think it would have been responsible and boss-ly of him to care. I easily could have been knocked unconscious and no one would have known until the morning, when I wasn't home. By then, I certainly would have frozen to death. It's just so scarry to me, I guess.

Yes, sorry, I'm really emotional about it right now. lol. I would, of course try to be a little less so if I talked to him about it.

My advice to you is to look for another job. Sound a little drastic? Perhaps. But i mean this is your JOB! My job means ALOT to me....and honestly so does my boss...to me my job is like an extended family and i want to be comfortable when i go to work as it is like a second home. If no one cares there then i do not feel like i care about my work either. I mean when i put great care into my work, it sorta is like a reflection of my care towards my boss/ company...because my care towards work/ boss means a good result for him from the company..ultimately that is the case...so he needs to be kissing your butt!! There is no reason for him to be lacking in care for you! I would be highly offended if i were you.

I say stick it out where you work but look around in the meantime. Why work for someone who could care less about whether you live or die?

As far as the other comments giving your boss the benefit of the doubt...that is a bunch of crap!! HE IS THE BOSS!!!! HE KNOWS BETTER!! THAT IS WHAT HE GETS PAID BIG BUCKS FOR!! HE IS TRAINED IN THE AREA OF HOW TO TREAT HIS STAFF.. BELIEVE ME!! No excuse for him! NONE

You asked for my advice...you got it!

You definitely should bring this up with the boss, but you need to be a lot less emotional and drop the "no one cares if I'm dead" stuff. Ask the boss, for future reference, when the weather is bad should I call you before leaving for work, since you didn't call me the other night before closing the place. I agree it was rotten for the boss not to call you and to make you go out on icy roads, but you sound so needy about this that it will come off like a personal problem.

First, you need to tell your boss what happened and mention to him that you feel you should be compensated for at least 1/2 day's work for making an attempt to come in. All bosses, or companies for that matter, care about is getting the work done. No matter how great a job you do, most companies/bosses think their employees can be easily replaced.
You could have totaled your vehicle or gotten seriously injured, etc. Sounds like you might have learned that next time. It is just not worth risking your life, no company is worth that...

i know how u feel, but unfortionally its not ur bosses job to keep tabs on their employees. i agree, it sucks. maybe u can let him know what happened and he will become more aware of potential problems with the roads being icy and all. do ur co-workers and boss have ur cell #? if not, give it to them. maybe u can organize some sort of employee check thing at work, so that if someone is running unusually late, someone will call and make sure they aren't in a ditch or something. drive safely and good luck!! ps, i live in the snow too, it sucks!!!

Instead of asking if your boss cares if you live or die, I would give your boss your phone number and state that you want to make sure that the phone number you have listed is the most current so that way your boss can call you with any work schedule changes.

I guess it depends on how important the job is to you. Maybe it would be a good idea for you to calm down before you talk to your boss. Maybe you should ask, that your boss call someone in the event that you are ever late in the future. It is important that you remember that people do thoughtless things because they are not thinking. The fact your boss didn't call does not mean that he or she did not care, but instead he or she forgotten about you temporally.

That is annoying. In fairness to your boss, he may have ben faced with a difficult decision and just forgot. The only thing you could do is very diplomatically tell him that you had a lot of trouble getting to work that night, and provide him with a cell (or some other alternate #) to contact you in case the situation ever arises again. If you get much pushier than that, it will only hurt you.

Hang in there!
