Both CPU has equal power & features.
The differences are:

1. AMD is 30-40% cheaper than Intel.
2. AMD is open to overclock, Intel is not.
3. AMD has a big collection of chipsets (nForce, VIA, etc.) & cheaper. Intel only use Intel's chipsets.
4. AMD's motherboard is 40-50% cheaper than Intel's.
5. Intel is optimised to "optimise" Windows codes, AMD is for general use (works fine with Linux).
6. AMD can be easily overclocked via CPU or motherboard. Intel depends on motherboard's FSB.
7. AMD is slightly hotter then Intel.
8. AMD consumes slightly more power than Intel.
9. Newest Intel's CPU are optimised for Wi-fi, AMD has obnly limited support.

Suggestions:
1. If you're an extreme gamer, use AMD.
2. If you're a tech-nerd, get the AM2.
3. If you have unlimited budget, use Intel.
4. If you use your PC with extensive graphics, use AM2 + nForce4/5 + SLI graphics combination.
5. If you use your PC for creating 3D model/graphics, use Intel.
6. If you use your PC in a network, use Intel.
7. If you use Linux, use AMD.
8. If you use your PC as a server, use Intel.
9. Get the highest model if possible.

AMD for sure, but if you can afford the AM2 and want a gaming machine, get the AM2 and put it on a good Asus or Abit board. I made the mistake of buying Intel because it was on special once and supposedly faster than AMD. Never will I buy Intel again. Intel advertises more, but AMD is the better processor especially if you plan on overclocking.

No matter which CPU you get now days they are all pretty fast. However, Intel Core 2 Duo is the fastest right now. Just don't get Celeron or Semperon.

RAM is important if you have less than 1 GB. For a budget computer more than 1GB is too much.

Rest of the money should be spent on a fast video card. Get a dedicated card with at least 128MB of dedicated memory. Stay away from the on-board video cards if want to play lots of 3-D games.

AMD was good for gaming, but with the introduction of Core 2 Duo line of Intel processors, AMD has lost its leadership in that segment. Go for Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 - It'll set you back by about Rs 8000.

You should go for Intel processor such as Core 2 Duo or Core 2 Extreme and buy a motherboard from Nvidia.
Thats the best way to have an excellent gaming experience.
