As said by a previous post - the same as the Europeans!

Seriously, alternate fuels for internal combustion engines are available/being developed - I recently started running my Citroen on Biodiesel - converted rapeseed oil. Hydrogen is not a good solution as the only way of producing it economically is from crude oil. No wonder the oil companies are pushing Hydrogen over anything else!

Electric cars have their place, and battery technology is increasing all the time, so expect them to be a more common sight over the next 15 years, but long distance haulage needs to either shift back to trains or switch to biofuels.

At some point, petrol and diesel WILL become too expensive for the vast majority of road users. Hopefully people will get the message and start doing shorter journeys on foot/bike/crappy public transport, I just hope to be ahead of the curve with the biodiesel...

the other question is what will the supermarket chains do, no more lorries. Seems like a better world all together, of course shipping will go back to sail or some other form of wind power aided by solar power and, if the greens are correct, the world will cool and a new ice age will appear. Seems like we will need oil and coal again in a few hundred years just to warm up the globe.

The issue is not one of "running out" so much as it is not having enough to keep our economy running. In this regard, the ramifications of Peak Oil for our civilization are similar to the ramifications of dehydration for the human body. The human body is 70 percent water. The body of a 200 pound man thus holds 140 pounds of water. Because water is so crucial to everything the human body does, the man doesn't need to lose all 140 pounds of water weight before collapsing due to dehydration. A loss of as little as 10-15 pounds of water may be enough to kill him.

In a similar sense, an oil-based economy such as ours doesn't need to deplete its entire reserve of oil before it begins to collapse. A shortfall between demand and supply as little as 10-15 percent is enough to wholly shatter an oil-dependent economy and reduce its citizenry to poverty.

Well recently they have been designing vehicles driven by solar energy and also electric energy. I'm sure by the time that oil runs out that research on transportation will be far more advanced than it is now and energy cars will be like drving any other car out there. Hopfully this answers your questiong. Peace.

Within the next 10-25 years we will switch from petroleum based fuels to corn oil based fuels. The automobile industry is too large and profitable to just go away..........

Basically pavements and roads will be replaced by really huge luggage collection carousals and all you have to do is hop on and hop off wherever you like. Completely run on renewable energy and really fun!
:P
People wont even have to walk anymore.

MANY SCIENTIST ARE OF THE BELIEF THAT OIL IS NOT A FOSSIL FUEL AT ALL. IT WAS NOT DERIVED BY DECOMPOSING DINOSAURS OR PLANT LIFE. THEY BELIEVE IT IS ACTUALLY CREATED DEEP IN THE EARTH. WE NEED ALTERNATIVES FOR COMPETITION BUT OIL WILL NOT RUN OUT IN MY LIFETIME. WE HAVE ENOUGH OIL SHALE IN COLORADO AND WYOMING UP THOUGH CANADA FOR THE NEXT 40 YEARS--JUST NOT ECONOMICALLY DOABLE WITH CRUDE PRESENT PRICE.

AAAHHHHHHH!!!!! We'll actually have to WALK places!!! NOOO! I can't....it's too hard on my fragile body!!!

Actually, it might be better...people will get healthier from all the outdoor exercise, fewer car accidents will occur because nobody's driving, and the air quality will improve! I would only mind on rainy days...

;)

well actually we will convert to hydrogen base vehicles (running off water) wich already in new york city all the buses in the city run off water so that is probably what we'll do and also there are electonical engines

I can't bear to think about Americans having to WALK...
They will probably invent some kind of air propelled wings which people can attach to their backs.
