As mentioned before, keywords is one trick, but not very powerful, in many cases.

One major trick is to get many other sites linking to your site...this affects sites like Google that rank by popularity and Webcrawlers like Alta-Vista that find pages by searching through links on other pages. One way to get lots of links to your site is by using specific functions of your company potential solutions to business problems on web forums and newsgroups (just make sure it addresses and at least partly answers the problem/question asked well; if it just advertises the site it can come across as spam).

Far as sites like Yahoo! (which store searches on databases) the most influential way to go is advertising your website via registration services (you can get good "register your page on all search engine" packages for around $120). This will also bump up your popularity and stats on sites like Google.

The last trick is having another site put a banner from your site on their site for free, but giving them a percentage of the profits made on your site by each buyer who clicks through (IE affiliate advertising). This can make your site incredibly popular and most often works at no financial loss to you (IE customers who click through and you have to give away a % of sales from are customers you wouldn't have gotten at all without the ad...and they often come back without clicking on the banner the second time, so you still come out ahead).

for the sake of learning, take a minute as well and read a bit on a tactic called 'google bombing'

google bombing is when someone cause a search for word like 'waffles' to show john kerry's site or a search like 'miserable failure' to show the biography of George W Bush as the top result for that search, even though the phrase "miserable failure" does not appear anywhere within his biography.

it will help you to understand how google works and get your site ranking manipulated.
