You need upload bandwidth and a commercial account.

Most broadband suppliers do not allow users to run servers on the home accounts services. If you are on DSL the practicality of running a server is limited. Your may have 3 meg down but only 256 up. I am on Charter and they will convert me to a commercial account if I want to run a server. I have 5meg down and 512 up (barely enough if the server is busy) for business they offer 5meg down 1meg up.

If you get T1 service from the many suppliers of those you can run your server and be assured of the outbound speed. (1.5 mg up and down) Several of those are fairly affordable these days 300-400/month. It all depends on where you live and what service providers are around that area. AT&T, Verizon, etc all offer T1 service. Others are Covad, cbeyond, speakeasy etc.

no matter what your internet service provider is u can host a site from your own server, basicaly the only real things to consider are bandwidth, and how much activity u think your site will get. if you will get alot of activity, u are going to want alot of bandwidth, so you will look into faster connections. personaly i have run a computer for my family to store random bits of programs like video decoders, and instant messaging installation files... as long as you have the bandwidth to support the volume of hits, u are fine. also be aware that if u run that server on the same ISP as your own personal internet, you can suffer a decrement in speed for your internet surfing habbits... generaly with all internet, more bandwith= more :D. good luck with finding the right company in your area to service what u need.

an undemanding answer, No-a popular information superhighway connection won't suffice. in case you have become 80000+ hits/ month then you will probable want the two a fiber connection, organisation type, T1, or different severe-bandwidth and severe-uptime connection. additionally, you'll be able to/won't want a static IP handle staring on the type you place up your internet site. wish this helps! If worse consists of worse, you're probable greater useful off in basic terms using a information superhighway host like community ideas, 1and1, or GoDaddy. they're the suited 3.
