Americans allect their leaders, thus it isn't a repupblic.
Some of American policies might be that of a repupblic, but in no way can America be considered a repupblic.

Aztec276 is correct, the US of A is a Democratic-Republic. It would be fairly impossible for us to be a direct democracy, due to the size and comparable separation of our population. However that really only applies to the federal government. The states, counties and local municipals oftentimes have more direct democratic ways of doing things. I live in California, and one of the ways to get a "law" passed is for citizens' groups to get together and put a direct ballot for voting by the general state population, called a proposition. In the propositions, the citizens can directly vote for laws for or against. In most other methods, we are a republic, in a bad way though. Many of our elected representatives do it as a career and "lose touch" with their constituents.

We have a mixed government. In some ways our governemnt is a Republic (Congress passing laws on our behalf) and in some ways it's a democracy (us passing laws directly).
Republic: a state in which the supreme power rests in the body of citizens entitled to vote and is exercised by representatives chosen directly or indirectly by them.
Democracy: government by the people; a form of government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised directly by them or by their elected agents under a free electoral system.

Because these idiotic colleges are teaching their students now that America is a democracy when it is not, and never has been. America was formed as a Republic, just as you stated.

America is a democratic Republic. We elect people who are supposed to represent us...in theory.
