Well it depends on the make & model of your vehicle. If you have a Ford with a PATS key (Passive Antitheft system) it will cost you about $20 for the actual key and about an hour of diagnostic time to program it to your vehicle. This has to be done in order for your vehicle to start. Most manufacturers now have keys that are built with a microchip inside them that the PCM (powertrain control module i.e. computer brain of the vehicle )must "recognize" in order for the engine to fire. Without being programmed to match the car, the key will crank the engine over all day long but it will not start. This is an antitheft feature standard on most cars since the late 1990's. That is why you have to pay so much for replacement keys these days. Honda has the same thing. Chevy has the Passlock System. Ford has PATS and so on and so on. But in case the key is one charge ranging usually from $20-$50 and then an hour of diagnostic labor (ranging from $55- over $100 depending upon your locality and manufacturer) to look up your key code and program the key to your car. (you will also have to tow the vehicle to the dealer to do this.)

If you car is an old junker from the 1980's or early 90's you may get lucky with a key for a few bucks but I am guessing this is not the case.

It depends on the kind of car that you have.. If u have (had) a key with the computer chip in it (like i do for my 2002 ford focus) then u have to call the dealership and see what they can do to help..
The chip key costs about 150 (where i live, Alaska)..

I would recommend u call your car dealership, cause they can point u in the right direction..
good luck!

I had to get a new key from a Saturn dealer. It cost me $20 and took about 20 minutes. 5 to cut the key and 15 to look up the pattern from the VIN of the car.
