If you're talking about elemental Iron, then it has 26 electrons. This is because all elements are NEUTRAL, which means that the number of protons has to equal the number of electrons

If you're talking about ionic Iron, then the most common, I believe, is Fe 2-, which means there would be 2 more electrons than protons, so 28

In order to balance the charge of the atom, there needs to be the same number of positive subatomic particles (protons) as there is negative (electrons). In this case, the atom is neutral, so there are 26 protons and electrons to balance out the charges. Fe56 is an isotope, and the mass number is 56. The mass number comes from the sum of protons and neutrons. We know that the atomic number (number of protons) is 26. Subtract that from 56 to get the number of neutrons (30). Elements have the same number of protons and electrons. Ions may have more or fewer electrons.

all elemental atoms have a neutral overall electrical charge. So, the number of negatively charged electrons must equal the number of positively charged protons in the nucleus.
Ignore the neutrons, they're just there to keep the similar electrically charged protons from repelling each other and breaking the nucleus apart--except for hydrogen which has only one proton.
