I have this hard drive that I had on a computer with windows 98. My computer is not working anymore so I bought a hard drive enclosure to get the files from this hard drive but my xp can not even read it. I connected it to the usb as an external drive but it does not even show on my computer. The other hard drives I have work perfectly with the enclosure. I don't want to lose the files I have on this hd.. Can somebody please help.

Thanks

The problem might be the jumper switches on the hard drive. Depending on the model, even within the same brands, only the correct jumper setting will allow the USB enclosure to read the hard drive. You have to try out all the jumper setting because some HDD will connect using the master setting, and other will connect with cable select setting. Other will connect with default factory setting.

Windows XP can easily read FAT, FAT32, NTFS file systems. So you do not need to convert the file systems. This is a good way to loose all your data.

That old drive maybe already be fried. Try and find a IDE-to-USB cable. May work better. I've had issues with enclosures before. But it more than likely sounds like the drive is bad.

Older generation hard drives have jumper switches to designate whether they are master or slave drives. There is no need to do this for hard drives nowadays. Check if your hard drive is one of the older generation hard drives. If it is, check the website of the manufacturer for jumper settings.

XP will work fine with FAT32 and NTFS. NTFS is compulsory for the drive partition where Windows is installed but other drive partitions and drives can use other formats.

If your computer has an AMD CPU, and Viatech USB Host Controllers; changing the USB Host Controller drivers to standard or generic drivers, may work. Sometimes, putting a line in config.sys, helps. ie. "lastdrive=m"

Try putting your FAT hard drive onto slot IDE 2 (inside you computer) and try moving all your files to a newer hard drive and then remove it (in case you had to take out a CD-ROM, DVD-ROM or hard drive from IDE 2)

Hope this helps!

Agreed with the above post. XP won't read FAT(32) drive partitions...it needs to be converted to NTFS first.

because the drive is from a computer, and has an opperating system on it, u may need to plug the HDD into your computer as a slave drive, and take whatever files out manualy.
