A colony is a harsh word(not a pc one these days either). Usually utilized by people in the left politically speaking. For the US for instance it is usually called a comonwealth. A good example of a commonwealth is Puerto Rico. Puerto Rico is a commonwealth of the USA. They are basically under Federal rule like any other state but have a governor and the right to make their day to day desicions as long as it does not interfere with any Federal laws. Be careful with the term commonwealth though because it means different things for different countries. Some would argue that a commonwealth is a colony. That is another issue...

I would say colony, or commonwealth if you want another British term. Puerto Rico is considered a territory, colony, or commonwealth - and called such by many different websites - of the United States. Puerto Rico is not a state, but it is still considered part of the United States. The U.S. Virgin Islands would be another one.
