Get it copyrighted first; then a lawyer. If you are new to script writing, you can pretty much forget getting an advance for your work.

Go for a few points on the gross (the accountants will find ways to make the net profit disappear). One or two percent of the box office and the control of the copyright can make you wealthy. Have clauses in the contract for television and direct to video royalties-just in case they try to escape paying you by not showing it in theaters.

If J.K. Rowling wasn't already rich, she could live comfortably off only one percent of the first movie's world wide box office take.

Start by writing the complete story (book), have it published, and
be looking for film producers. If you don't have enough money to
produce the film yourself, you'll be selling ONLY the movie rights
to a producer and his/her film company. Be sure you KEEP the
rights to be the consultant during filming.
YES YOU DO NEED COPYRIGHT FOR YOUR STORY.
If the producer agrees, you might even be allowed to serve as an
assistant director. Convince a producer of the value of your
story, and the potential profits, and your story should sell.
The price of your story can range from $35,000 up to $127,000.
But you can also reserve "Royalty Rights"--that way, your movie
will pay you a percentage of the box office each time it's shown
and viewed in a theater.

A movie story can sell as much and as often as the studios buy.
