It is illegal to be impaired. If you are not impaired the police have no right to ask you to empty your pockets, go through your car, Or talk to you about anything unrelated to the business at hand.
If you are impaired they are treating you like a suspect in a crime. They have a job and you must remember that if given the opportunity they are going to find something wrong, Although police are people they are not a friend you should tell your problems to because they can and will take advantage. The police have a support group and you will never beat the group. You have no rights when speaking to a policeman. Act and speak accordingly.
