when it hasnt rained and nothing has washed in the water from TJ the Silver Strand and Caronado beaches are great. They dont get the crowds and I have never seen any trouble there.

I also like Ocean beach.

La Jolla shores. Actually, any beach in La Jolla...EXCEPT the Children's Pool. Despite the name and the fact that it's original use was as a wading area for children (no waves), it is now inhabited by seals. Some people on this board might say it's okay for your kids to use it, but really...it's not.

You get lots of tourist traffic to the Children's Pool to see the seals, and the easiest way to get people angry is to scare the seals away with your kids.

There's a group of people who want the Pool back for use by children, but there's another group who protect the seals. It's a huge controversy.

The two best for kids I know of are La Jolla Shores and Moonlight beach in Encinitas. Both have enough parking so that you can get there about 9:00am and still find a spot (but not much after that unless it's winter). The beach is a long sandy one, so there is less to worry about for sneaker waves and not as many rips. They also have playgrounds and swings if the kids get tired of the waves.

Pacific Beach is nice, as is Mission beach. A lot of parents take their kids to Mission Bay too, but watch for polution warnings whatever beach you go to. Lots of recent rain generally means you don't want to be in the water.

La Jolla shores is a great beach for kids. That beach has the most families with children that any other beach I've been to. In summer it can get pretty crowded but it's such a nice beach and I think it has some of the warmest water too.

The Childrens Pool in La Jolla has always been good, but I've heard the water has gotten pretty polluted. You wouldn't want to go right now, lots of rain, rip currents, and surf advisories.
