While I hate to admit it, the democrats may win the presidency in '08. Every presidential candidate has proposed a plan to pull us out of Iraq in less than a year.
After they pull us out, Malake (the prime minister of Iraq) and Ahmehenijad will ally, Russia has already allied with Iran. With our enemies (yes, Russia is still our enemy, like it or not) in control of most of the major oil reserves they will be able to corner the world oil market. This will severely damage the US economy.
Oil isn't just used in gasoline, anything plastic in your house is oil, your electricity is created by oil (and coal), your heater probably runs because of oil, the pump for your running water runs off oil.
Finding an alternative energy source is a great ambition but nothing produces energy in any amount compairable to oil, so the logistics and the cost of using the current sources of alternative energy make them completely implausable.
Thoughts? Flame away!

Bush has terrible PR. I think our true intentions for going to war were not completely what was told to the public, and I think our goals not are not being made clear to the public.
Yes the president hasn't apologized, but just because he hasn't apologized, asking for an apology isn't a plan of action, its a flamefest.

We rely heavily on middle eastern oil for certain things. Almost all oil used in transportation comes from the middle east because Mexican and Canadian oil is not suitable for fuel purposes.
I would love to break away from oil, but its not feasable now, and with only Saudi oil we would be in trouble.
Recently Russia has sided with Iran, they have cut off oil to Eastern Europe, and they and warned us not to put sanctions on Iran. They havn't made any real threats yet, but I don't think its out of the question.
I don't want war, but our continued prescence in Iraq is keeping much of the world at peace, at a very low cost, weather you choose to beleive it or not.

Thank you Michael N for an actual answer.
All of those plans leave us and leave Israel out to dry, but I don't think the Dems realise it yet.
I think the next presidency will be regarded as the worst presidency in the history of the United States.

Well first of all, the democrats are not going to pull us out of Iraq...its all a bunch of BS. It is the SAME BS they were spewing before the 06 elections...two months and now what...no impeachment and no pressing for withdrawl. They are just professional liars like everyone else in politics.
I really cannot tell you whos going to win the elections...but at this point i think someone with Obama who is younger and not quite as "DCized" as the other candidates might get the popular vote. But someone like him will quickly realize that hes not in control, and the country is not controlled by a system of checks and balances and representitive government...but by a rich and powerful few who pull the strings. This might sound absurd to the average ignorant person...but just look back into history...and read what some of our great presidents have said about how this country really works...they have been trying to tell us for years but we refuse to or CAN'T hear it. A president...no matter how good a person he really is or how great a "leader" really can't do much unless he steps "out of line" and the last president to do that was JFK...and i think we all know what happened to him.
On oil and the economy...You are very correct. The very computers we are on right now are made with oil! The keys i am typing with were made with oil! Oil cannot just be shoved aside instantly...it will take gradual steps in production and manufacturing to ween us off it. If we decided to use some type of plastic that has no oil in it or something of that nature...it would cost billions of dollars for all the plants and factories around the country to adapt to the new standard and upgrade their equipment and training for the new materials if needed.
As far as energy production from oil...thats not true. Many different forms of fuel are more effient than gasoline or oil. Our cars spew out a great amount of unburned and inefficiently processed gas constantly. Actually today i saw a semitruck, the side of it said something about the millions of gallons of oil used every year in cars...and also talked about how their company cleans old oil and reuses it. This is what we need more of right now...we need to focus on getting the most out of our oil while we can. Look at the American car companies...they were losing business because of fuel efficency a few years ago....how long did it take them to make their cars nearly efficent as Honda and Toyota? One model year. This just goes to show that it is very easy for them to make vehicles and engines/generators more efficient. For some reason they just aren't doing it. I also think hydrogen has promise as a vehicle fuel. Any car can run on hydrogen if you inject enough of it into the intake.
Well...thats all i can type! =)

I agree with your consensus on the oil situation and here is what I think should happen. I think that instead of expecting the military in Iraq to quell the violence so the Iraqi government can function properly and begin reconstruction, it is the other way around. Until the politics of Iraq are stabilized nothing is going to stop the fight between the factions. Whether it is technically Iraq's responsibility to solve that problem or not, it has also become our problem. Make a greater effort to stabilize the politics and the military presence can be reduced. But we have to maintain a presence in Iraq, for many of the reasons you mentioned.
Then, when that it is in hand, we need to join Britain in Afghanistan in force. The Taliban is crawling all over Afghanistan and they are enjoying a huge resurgence and large numbers of new recruits. We also need to pay more attention to Western Iraq, where Al Queda is gaining many footholds.
Iran and Syria should remain engaged in talks, with us, our Allies and members of the U.N. as long as possible. It is only to our advantage.
Ideally, we should be able to put all these things into action simultaneously. But we do not have the military numbers available for an endeavor that huge, unless we start closing some of our bases around the world, and/or re-institute the draft.
As far as the Democrats future plan for the area goes, I know most of the candidates agree that we desperately need to go into Afghanistan and most of them have spoken about the Western Provinces. I think they are very aware that we cannot stay mired in Iraq forever, and we are playing Russian roulette by ignoring what is happening in the rest of the region.

Oh, you are still worried about oil!!
That's why we attacked Iraq in the first place, American Oil companies lost 3 large contracts to France and Russia, and that is all you talk about!
Not the WMD's he didn't have and Bush knew it and lied to Congress. Iraq were not terrorist and they had nothing to do with 9/11! But you love their oil!
You love Iran's as well it seems!
We get 1/3 of our oil from Canada and 1/3 from Mexico, the people you love to hate! I think we can find a source without overthrowing Iran for Oil as the CIA did when they put the Shaw of Iran in power and booted out an ELECTED government!

The plan has to be considered from a military point of view. Right now, Gen Pace has stated our military capability has eroded, to the point that engaging in another war would be risky.
That assessment means China is able to take Taiwan, without much of a challenge from the US. Given that they just shot down a satellite, we might need to redeploy JUST to defend our country and rebuild our forces, while we re assess the global situation.
Currently, the biggest beneficiaries of our involvement in Iraq are China and Russia. While we bog down our military, they are building up their forces.
We better re think our posture, because right now, our biggest enemies are watching and waiting...

God forbid that they'd win the White House. This country would be doomed. It would be my guess that they would pull out of Iraq, Iraq would go into a civil war, and it would be even more of a mess. Then Iran would intercede and take some kind of control in that region. We would be getting terrorist attacks like crazy worldwide, because we would not have troops in the region to keep them in check. The terrorists would then have two bases of operations, in perfect safety.....Iraq and Iran.
My thoughts.... terrorists will be pouring over our porous borders from Mexico, and we'll be fighting them in our streets. It's just a matter of time.

Senator Joe Biden has proposed diving Iraq into three autonomous regions, and to keep U.S. troops there until 2009. His 34 years on the foreign service committee make this suggestion worth considering. He also opposes the use of U.S. troops in direct combat roles, suggesting this should be left to the Iraqi government.
Senator Barack Obama wants to withdraw the troops by mid-2008. This would be a gradual withdrawal, allowing the Iraqi government to take over security measures.
I'm not sure about details of other plans. Obviously, Bush's plan for U.S. troops to remain forever won't work.

Glad to see someone else has noticed the Democrats don't have a plan - just pull out and let the chips fall where they may.
Yeah that's very reassuring. Iraqi refugees better get out before a Democrat president gets in.

The Dems have a plan? The only thing they actually plan is trying to make Bush look bad with all the lies they tell.
They don't have the brains to actually conjure up a real plan for anything

the only problem with your "theory" is they would basically have to say "go to you know where" to OPEC... which would just make OPEC mad and they would drop oil prices and raise production just to make Iraq and all them angry....
and if they stop selling oil... they won't have any money... that's the little trick... you have to sell the oil to get the money...
and I don't see Russia playing "hardball" either personally... they are trying to develop and I think they want to be on our good side... we generate billions and making us angry could jeopardize that...
