3x-1 = 11
+1 +1
3x=12
-- --
3 3
x=4
So
x^2 +x (I think you mean x to the second power, not x times 2-please clarify your question!)
(4)^2+4
16+4
20

I have a brilliant Idea, use the symbolic method to find x:
3x - 1 = 11
+1 +1
3x=12
--- --- <-Divided by
3 3
-------------- Equals
x=4
so (4)2 +4 equals 12.
And please note you are getting this from an 8th grader who does the advanced homework.
Eriq... How do you get 10 from 8 + 4? You actually wrote it like (4)2 + 4 but still that equals 12 because (4)2 = 8

You've got to be kidding me. Not your question, but the first answer. Let's try this again.
3x-1=11.
3x=12 (adding 1 to both sides)
x=4 (divide both sides by 3)
(4) 2 +(4) (Substitution)
8+4=12. That's TWELVE.

3x-1=11
so add 1 to both sides
3x=12
divide both sides by three
x=4
x2+x=12 not 10(like the first answerer said)
(4)2+(4)
4*2=8
8+4=12
