I restarted my game and tried a new strategy as I barely eeked by the first time. When you first come through the cave, teach everybody but one person to do research. While that one person is getting the fish, scout constantly for mushrooms to create a buffer. When you reach enough tech points, buy the first farming technology and nothing else at this point. By the time your tribe has run out of fish, you should have enough points to buy the rights to the coconuts.

Now comes the strategy. Dedicate your researchers to buying the next step of the construction technology. As soon as you can buy Level 2 Construction, set most of your available workers to build a dam at the narrow point in the creek, right above the covered mosaic. The dam will move the water to the soil nearby, which you can farm.

A couple more suggestions: 1) You shouldn't grow your population too fast. With less mouths to feed, you can conserve food; it's smart gameplay. I cleared the algae easily with a mere 15 tribe members.

2) Buy no other technologies until you can purchase L3 Farming. Don't waste it on solving other puzzles--you'll just prolong your agony.

3) When you start to farm, be sure to create a scarecrow from the twisted vines at the top of the map.

4) Use only one or two people to farm the land. The faster you farm the soil, the longer it takes for the food to grow back. If you take your time, you'll have a constant, if small, source of food for your villagers. Keep an eye on the coconuts too, as they'll grow back--slowly, but they'll grow back.

5) Finally, always, always search for mushrooms, particularly the red-capped ones. Red mushrooms net 35 food whereas brown mushrooms are a mere 6.

Once you get the algae gone, feel free to grow your population as big as you want and buy whatever technology you want!

Hope that helps!

when the algae comes and you are working on clearing the algae you need to stay in the game all the time and use the children to gather EVERY mushroom that pops up. as long as you haven't made more villagers this is enough to keep them alive, it helps to have as many people as possible gathering fish from the start. but the children and the mushrooms are the key.

The first thing you need to do is obtain 2nd stage in farming then drag your villagers over to start to build a damn to irrigate the dry land close to where the stream narrows. this is imperative to your little fellas survival. The villagers should automatically start farming but if not drag them over to the land and make them work the fields You will find that once you have the land and you start to farm the birds will plague your farmers and will keep nicking your seeds. Get your master farmer to go to the vines north of the tech table and he will build a scarecrow to frighten the birds away. I find that .aways having one villager doing just one task (one researching constantly, one farming, one healing and studying the plants, one building)means they obtain a master in it to unlock more complex puzzles. Hope this helps.

You should try to get the farming advancement (for coconuts) asap and use that to buy enough time to build the dam (use all of your people who aren't farmers) which will give you a field to farm.
