A bit of trivia for you. What with all the pirate stuff going on on this site as of late, I thought I'd throw this out. The eye patch was used extensively by not only pirates, but other sailors as well. It was not used to cover a missing eye.
It was used to cover one eye, thereby keeping one eye adjusted to the dark. When it was necessary to go below deck, the patch was shifted to the other eye. It made it possible to see better in the darkness below decks. Without having to wait for the eye to adjust. Makes a lot of sense when you think about it.
