From the song "I've Seen All Good People", what do you suppose the line "Don't surround yourself with yourself" means?

I take that to mean that people try to project who they THINK they are to others, when actually they hide who they really are. This is especially true of those who carry emotional scars.

They are talking about a chess game. Listen to the lyrics.
Perhaps they infer life is like a chess game and should sometimes be approached as such, in a metaphoric sense.
"Don't suround yourself with yourself. Move on back two squares."
Chess pieces are mentioned also. "White Queen"
