I just started up a 20gal tank with 3 zebra danios, 3 dwarf gouramis, & 1 red-tailed shark. I keep reading that the gouramis are too territorial to keep together in such a small space. Are they usually compatible with one another? Are they compatible with a red-tailed shark as well?

Yes the gouramis are peaceful fish generally they are a good community fish the Red-Tail Shark’s do like a place to hide in the tank they are also a good communality fish
But any fish can be unpredictable and behaviors can change especially if you start adding in new fish and the senior fish are protecting their territory.

The RTS (red tail shark) will get too big and too aggressive for a 20 gallon tank. As for the dwarf gouramis you don't say what gender ratio you have. 1 male and 2 females should be okay. More that 1 male will be a problem though. I have kept dwarf gouramis in a 20 gallon tank before with no problems.

The gouramis are a very peaceable fish and will get along with other fish. Sometimes, however you could get one that is territorial, and chase them away, but most of the time they leave other fish alone. They will not kill any fish. I would watch out for the red tail shark though, the bigger they get the bigger the fish they will go after. I know because I always thought one of my other fish was killing the others so I kept buying more until one day I caught him in the act, and down the toilet it went. Had no more problems since. Good luck.

The Gouramis might attempt to mate with the female Betta because of fact they're like cousin fish. The male Gouramis might combat for dominance. It extremely relies upon on the Dwarf Gouramis aggressiveness, in the event that they're extremely peace finished, particular. If no longer, no.
