For anti-virus, I recommend Avast. My husband and I used to use McAfee but found issues with one of our computers.... so we tried free and honestly we found it caught more stuff than the paid McAfee version.
You can get it here: http://filehippo.com/download_avast_antivirus/

Hello. I think one of the best is AVG's by Grisoft (I believe). It works well and will even scan your pop3 email from Outlook Express. I use that and Spyware Terminator to check things out daily. I'd also recommend cleaning out your cache (i.e. history, cookies, typed url's, etc.) daily following your surfing via an app called CCleaner. It will clean out that and more whether you use IE or Firefox by Mozilla. Another tip is to always download items into a "My Downloads" file, then after the download's complete close the dialog box and right click it in My Downloads to check for viruses and the like. Good luck.

An important thing to keep in mind, regardless of which anti-virus, anti-malware, anti-spyware and firewall you use
( http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/default.mspx ) is to keep it UPDATED, just as it is important to make sure you have all windows critical and security updates +
http://update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us

Note: The way I have mine set is to only notify me that updates are availiable, but to not download them automaticaly. Then I can check to be sure I get just the ones I want. I then click on "custom", and after the updates have been downloaded I look them over to see which ones I want, then disconnect from the net, disable firewall and anti-virus program, and then install the updates, and then re-enable the firewall and anti-virus programs before reconnecting to the net.
