Brotherhood of the Wolf (French-Canadian I think)
Amelie (French - a very cute romantic movie)
House of Flying Daggers (a very sad movie, but beautiful)
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (Chinese)
Layer Cake (British)
Lock, Stock, and Smoking Barrels (British again)
Snatch (another British film)
When Turtles Fly/Flying Turtles (I can't remember the exact name of the movie. I saw it on Starz. About a young arab boy - a kurd? - taking care of his friends)
Triplets of Bellville
Shoti (again, not a 100 percent on the name. About a South African gangster boy who tries to take care of a white baby after killing the baby's mom in a carjacking)
Hope this helps

You should sooo totally watch Das Boot, a German movie that displays the German perspective on World War 2 by showing you their life on a submarine. That movie changed me, it was so powerful, and not about Germans or anyone else but just ordinary people who are trying to survive a war. And you see the devastating effects a war can have on the human mind. Highly recommended. I also enjoyed Goodbye Lenin, talks about the fall of the Berlin Wall. If you're into french movies, try Amelie, or the really old classics like Purple Noon with Alain Delon.
Hope this helps!

"The Cup"-young Buhdist monk is enthralled by soccer (football to the rest of the world) and desperately wishes to see the World Cup games on TV.
"Ran"-Japanese version of Shakespeare's "King Lear" by Akira Kurosawa.
"Seven Samuri" and "Yojimbo" (both by Kurosawa) have been adapted into westerns ("The Magnificent Seven" and "Fist Full Of Dollars" respectively).
"The Castle" is an Australlian film about a family living next door to the airport. When airport wants to expand and take possession of their home, the family must fight. Low budget, but charming.
"Priscilla Queen Of The Desert" stars Terence Stamp and Hugo Weaving as drag queens on a journey across the Australlian Outback. Oscar nominated for Best Costume and remade as "To Wong Foo, Thanks For Everything -Julie Newmar" for American audiences.
Chinese action/martial arts movies not to miss:
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Hero
House Of Flying Daggers

Raise the red lantern
pan's labryinth
Letters from iwo jima
these are all lovely in one aspect and "almost to completely" brutal in another
who knew - iwo jima story, directed by dirty harry could be so eloquent and have such a perfect ending.
lantern is historical, beautiful cinematography, devilishly entertaining and sad too.
pan is a lovely film - but brutal, but it seems to compliment itself
definite worth the time
