It depends on you prefer. Different brands make different basses, but Fender, in my opinion is a really good brand. Brands like Warwick and Modulus are awesome, but are far too expensive. I'd suggest a Fender Standard Jazz Bass (if not, an American Jazz Bass), it has a nice all-rounder tone to it, and won't cost you an arm and a leg.

I don't play bass but I know with other instruments, one brand that is good for one person might not be good for everyone. The best way is to got to a music store and try out all the basses and pick the one that feels best to you.

There's no "best" brand, play one and find out. My favorite (of course within my budget) are EB MusicMan Sting Ray and American made Fenders

Buy a Carvin...you can get it custom made without having to wait forever, and there simply is no better instrument to be had. I own 2 and will never use anything else.
