I agree that just because Senator McCain was imprisoned during the Vietnam War, that in and of itself does not entitle him, as he seems to believe, to become President of the United States. Senator McCain, in my judgement, is a cheerleader for the present Administration by advocating the escalation of the ill-conceived Iraq War, driving up already huge budget deficits, and basically out of step with ordinary America and its wants and needs. The United States requires a leader who is wise enough to reverse our policies on both the international and domestic fronts.

He's certainly more qualified than Bush ever was. At least he knows what he's asking people to go through when he sends them to war. And he knew from early on that we needed a lot more troops and that they should be better armed and protected.

Several good qualities about him stand out. First, he is willing to take brave steps to make the world a better place. He came on my radar screen during the Clinton administration when he led a congressional delegation to Vietnam to help begin establishing normalized relations with that country. Second, he has always been willing to buck his own party if he thought he was right (note the McCain-Feingold bill). He has frequently shown a willingness to work with Democrats to get things done. And I think he is absolutely right in saying that campaign finance reform is absolutely critical in making this a better country. Finally, he has a fine, self-deprecating sense of humor. He takes himself seriously, but he's not above poking fun at himself either.

On the other hand, he is a politician. For some reason he has concluded that what he did last time was wrong. His efforts to woo the right wingers in the Republican Party are losing moderates like me. His big mistake last time was in not blasting George W. to kingdom come after the South Carolina primary. After the surreptitious racist attacks that cost him that election, he should have exposed Bush for the empty suit he is. Bush was either responsible directly for those attacks, or indirectly by not utterly denouncing them and calling them off. When McCain eventually endorsed Bush anyway, I was sickened.

By the way, this is coming from someone who is still pulling for John Edwards (a strong southern progressive who should be able to get every state Gore and Kerry got) with Obama as his running mate (should help galvanize the Democratic electorate in general, and blacks in particular, leading to some surprising upsets in the South). Obama is the perfect age to serve a couple of terms as vice-president and learn the ropes.

Why would a war hero senator be less qualified than a southern governor who avoided service. Your choice Clinton or Bush
