If this is a normal coil, has someone removed the ballast resistor? When you start the car, the resistor is bypassed via the solenoid switch. While in the run position, the ballast resistor drops the voltage to the coil.

i own a shop and if you have a bad ground on it that will cause it to burn them out a lot other than that they should last a long time in that engine,check all the grounds real good,there should be a couple of them on there and one of them may be off or corroded over,good luck,i hope this help,s.
