I just ordered DSL with a 1.5mbps connection (from Verizon), but my download speeds are usually around 20KB/s. I ran a speed test at speakeasy.net and they gave me a speed of 232kbps (download) and 129kbps (upload). Is this unusual for a connection with my speed? Is there something wrong with my line?

Thanks for your responses. I am aware that megabits are different from megabytes. Also the 20kb/s is what the speed test site gave me (when I download from other sites it's often slower even). I just want to know if this is common, or if it's unusually slow.

the speed for dsl depends a lot on how far you are from the main office...could be right in line with what you can expect from that service.

next time check the fine print when you buy something like that

CORRECT ANSWER:

On a 1.5Mbps connection, 187.5 KB/s is the max. If you got anything over 200KB/s, you're getting more than you paid for.

To understand that, first you have to learn what "Mbps" stands for. It stands for "megabits per second". That's not the same as "megabytes per second". There's a big difference. Network speeds are always in bits, and there are 8 bits in one byte. So a 1.5Mbps connection is really 1500 kilobits per second. I divided that number by 8 to convert it to KB/s, which is 187.5

As for the 20KB/s download speed, well, the problem there is likely not you. It could be the site. Keep in mind that not every site out there is going to behave the same. Some are a shorter distance and smaller number of hope away from you. Others have slow upload speeds. Whatever the case, you should pay more attention to the max speed rated at that speedtest site you went to.

Could be with your line.

I've had a flurry of incomming traffic over the last two weeks which has slowed my speeds considerably. I usually have to disconnect the DSL connection, wait a minute and reconnect. This will obtain a new IP address and I'm usually fine for a while.

If you have a router, check it's logs and make sure you're blocking access from the WAN side.

Many issues

1. Line issue Filters not installed properly or defective filters. If you have a filter where the modem is at the phone jack take it off.
filters on all phone devices and only on the phone side of the filter

2. If you just got the speed the line may not be provisioned or the line may be capped due to line noise margins and line capacity
call your isp and see

3 Shut off the modem for 30 sec Try to run again

Remember that your DSL speed is from your computer to the nearest Hub.

Traffic through the internet may not be at that speed, and for a download the download server might limit the speed for a single connection.

it depends on the site your downloading it from they usually do low kb/s so it'll cost cheaper for them
