My friend was playing a match yesterday and I believe a false call was made, what is your opinion. It was 40-40, his add, and he was at the net. His opponent hit the ball directly at him and he hit an overhead, and the other guy missed it. Like 4-5 seconds passed, and my friend hit the net with his racket (because he just won). At that point the coach of the other team made them redo the point because you are not supposed to touch the net...is this a justified call? Should the coach have even been involved in all? (all in all we won the match against them). We're freshmen on the JV tennis team. Thanks.

well, it is true that if you touch the net during the point your opponent wins the point. If you are sure the point was finished then it should not matter. However to avoid such problems tell your friend to never touch the net.
I feel compelled to ask a question. Was the coach of the other team umpiring the match, as in calling all of the lines and the score after every point? He should not be umpiring the match, because he is directly involved with one of the players in it. Also if he wasn't umpiring the match he should not have interfered.

If he hit the net during the follow-through, he actually loses the point regardless of his overhead, but if 5 seconds passed, and he was just tapping the net and walking off the court after the point, then that coach was being unreasonable. Regardless, it is a bad habit to touch the net, treat it like kryptonite.

Your friend got jipped. First of all, after the ball has hit something and is out of play, you can hit the net.
Secondly, the coach can not interfere with a match. The players are supposed to settle any disputes.
Glad you won.
But how could it be 40-40, his ad? Were they playing no-ad scoring?

That is wrong. Once the point is over you can hit the net all you want until the next point starts. I play tennis on my middle school team and with friends only if you hit the net during the point is it your oppenents point. After the point if he hit the net is fine. Tell your friend what he did was perfectly fine.

Yes, i think that is a good call. If you hit the net during the point, then it doesn't count. Technically, the point hasn't ended until you've shooken hands. ALso, your coach is your coach so he is allowed to make calls like that.
If I'm wrong, I'm sorry

I think the point was already over, and was anybody umpiring the match? I think your friend should've already won.
