In the Yearling, do you think Jody paid too much attention to the fawn and its needs?

He was a kid and was getting no real attention and had no friends. Flag was his friend more than a pet. Yes he could have been more involved in the farming but kids need something other than work. I don't think he can be blamed even though his parents, especially his father did blame him. But his Dad couldn't help feeling that way either, He was scrambling to eke out a living for them. Great book. I read it when I was 10 and loved it.
