DWI means that you're drunk.
DUI means that you're under the influence of something - could be alcohol or something else, such as certain prescription medicines that cause impairment.

In Ohio and Tennessee they are both the same thing.
DUI - Driving Under the Influence (Can mean Alcohol or Drugs)
DWI - Driving While Intoxicated (Can also mean Alcohol or Drugs)
Either way Don't Drive Drunk or On Drugs. It is dangerous for You and the Other People on the Road

Basically different ways of saying the same thing. In the 50's, 60's & 70's it was DWI. DUI came in to play probably in early 80's. DUI covers anything that has altered your status, including alcohol, drugs, etc, while DWI refers to alcohol intoxication.

Nothing really but the changed it because many thought a DWI referred to just alcohol when you can be driving under the influence of many drugs!
It is like the difference between an EKG and a ECG!

This depends on the state. In some states that have both, DUI can mean not intoxicated but simply under the influence. This could refer to the influence of drugs or someone underage that has alcohol in their system but they are not intoxicated.

DWI, driving when intoxicated is worse, than driving under the influence. With a DWI it has been established that you are over the limit.
