The residents have not had an RA in about a month, I know that since it's the spring semister they may not really care about having an RA since they are already established. What does an RA need to do in the first weeks?

This actually happened to me in my dorms last year. We didnt have an RA for the first month or so of our Spring semester.

When our new RA came in, she had a meeting within the first week she was there to get to know her residents, set a few ground rules and to see if there were any issues within the hall that needed to be taken care of. Our hall had a few minor issues and she was very open to hearing about them and helping us fix them and reinforce rules that would help us all out. She ended up being the best RA I ever had.

You will, most likely, only be there RA for what 2-3 months. Try to be a friend to them but let them know that rules still apply and you will enforce them when needed.
