Obviously the most credit goes to Hulk Hogan, even people like The Rock and Steve Austin will tell you that. Yes, wrestlers like Triple H, The Rock, Brett Hart, Shawn Michaels, Mick Foley, The Undertaker, Kane, Brock Lesnar, Kurt Angle, John Cena, Ric Flair, Batista, King Booker, ect ect ect, they all help make WWE what it is today as well, but the guy who put it on the map and helped keep it on the map was The Immortal Hulk Hogan BROTHA!

Hogan put WWE on the map. Without him, nobody would care about the WWE. Guys like Triple H, Shawn Michaels, John Cena, Million Dollar Man, Rowdy Roddy Piper, Bret Hart, and even Ultimate Warrior are all top-tier talent who keep the promotion afloat, buty they don't expand the audience like a Hogan can.
Once in awhile a personality like Steve Austin or The Rock comes along and boosts the company above the norm, but both of those guys are gone now and the WWE is resting on the shoulders of guys like Cena, Batista, and the always reliable Undertaker.

Unfortunately, Hulk Hogan is the person to bring wrestling to the mainstream (in the 80s). In the 90s it was Hogan and the nWo in WCW and Austin and The Rock in the WWE. Today, it's John Cena.

Bret "The Hitman" Hart. If you don't believe me just remember when Bret Hart and the Hart Foundation went against the United States in a storyline in the late 90's in the WWF (now the WWE) everyone in the United States was split (those who still liked him even with the storyline like me and those who were against him) and the rest of the world was supporting him as if he were their own, it's was the first time ever in pro wrestling where in one place a wrestler was cheered and the other booed. Also, no other wrestler before or after has traveled around the world more often on his off time to greet fans and he always signed autographs. Those two reasons are why Bret "The Hitman" Hart is not only the greatest pro wrestler ever but also the most famous. I hope that answers your question.

The obvious answer is Hulk Hogan. He started it but there were a few that made significant contributions to making WWE famous.
Stone Cold Steve Austin - Brought Attitude to a new level.
The Rock - Talking smack & backing it up.
HHH - The game has been one of the best showmen the sport has ever seen.
DX & NwO - That fued helped catipult wrestling into the main stream.
