Changing virtual memory settings in your computer.
1. Start button.
2. Right click on My Computer
3. Choose Advanced tab.
4. Choose Performance tab
5. Click on Change
6. Read and write down the number that is in your Maximum size window.
7. Click on No Paging File
8. Click on OK three times.
9. Restart your computer.
10. (If computer restarts skip this number and go to 11.)If computer stalls, restart again and hit F8 repeatedly until you are at the page to start in Safe Mode. Choose Safe Mode and do 1-5 again.
11. When Windows is loaded do 1 - 5 again.
12. Click on Custom size.
13. Enter the same number in both boxes. Type in the Maximum size number twice if you like. Or if you have 2GB of RAM available type in 2560 in the first box and 2560 in the second box for best performance.
Note: If your computer ever gets slow or freezes occasionally your Paging file may have become fragmented. Following the same steps to get to it you can simply click on the No paging file, restart your computer, and a fresh un-fragmented page will be created after you reboot a second time after you finish restoring it to Custom size (MB) 3072 or less.
Make a note of your computer Maximum size (MB) for future reference.

If you're on Windows, free some space on your HDD. That should do it for now. The next step would be to set the virtual memory to a fixed size. It's in System Properties->Performance->Virtual Memory IIRC. Check "let me specify the limits..." and change them both to the same value (preferably a high one). Then click "Set"->"OK"->"OK" and restart. I think you'll like the difference in performance.

It normally will automatically adjust itself and you shouldn't have to do anything, but check that the setting it on automatic by right-clicking on My Computer and select Properties. Then click Advanced tab, then on Setting button in thePerformance area, then on Advanced tab again. At the bottom, you should see the current virtual memory settings. Click the Change button.
From there, you should see that it is set to be managed by the system. This is also where you'd change if it you're so inclined.

If you have XP, rclick 'my computer' --> properties and go to the Advanced tab to set this manually, although it's usually best to let Windows determine what it needs. This is your computer using space on your hard drive in place of physical RAM .. RAM is actually pretty cheap these days - much better to pop another stick in if your box is short on memory and much, much, much faster for anything/everything you use the computer for.
