Hold up means stop.

Hold on means wait.

Hang on means wait, but shortly.

They could all mean the same thing or something different. If they mean the same thing, it's usually 'wait'. If they mean different things it would be something like this: This is a hold up! Hold on to your hat. Hang on, I'm going faster.

Conversationally used, I guess hold up is used to describe a robbery (like a stick up at a bank), or a traffic hold up, or any kind of hindrance/delay.

Hold on and hang on mean more or less the same, I think. It's used when you want someone to wait for you.

"hold up" is when two people are moving in the same direction and one wants to stop for a moment, "hold on" is usually used when on the phone, when someone wants to interrupt your phone call you tell them to "hold on" your talking on the phone, it is also used as a form of interrupting someone when you don't understand what they are saying, "hold on" do you mean...., "hang on" can also be use during a phone conversation but you are usually saying this to the person on the other end of the line when you want to say something to a person that is in front of you or when someone wants to go somewhere and they say come on you can respond, "hang on" a minute.....
