Because of the fight she had with her mother. Her mother called her ordinary. She pretty much broke Meredith. That's okay, she lived because she saw her mom in death, and her mom told her that she is anything but ordinary. Plus, she said she didn't belong there.

To the poster below me:

Yeah, she did actually drown herself, because she gave up fighting the cold water. She knew how to swim!

She did it cause her mom broke her down but at the end her mom told her It was o.k. and that she did not belong there and for her to run.......MY IN PUT.............She better have lived cause i was never going to watch that show again if she died. I have been watching that show since day one.

She didn't. She swam until she got too tired & cold to keep going. She was alive & kickin' it w/ McDreamy @ the end of last weeks episode.
