Safety is one of the weakest positions in the draft with only 3 projected to go in the 1st round. The top safety in the draft is LaRon Landry out of LSU who is rated a top 20 pick. He has amazing speed and the excellent ability to cover the deep receiver. For this quality, the Cowboys are slated to draft him with the 22nd overall pick. The second ranked safety is Brandon Meriweather of Miami. He has the tools but lacks the necessary experience and may not start right away. Because of this, the Eagles are expected to take him with the 26th pick. The only other safety ranked in the first round is Reggie Nelson from Florida. He makes plays all over the field and has great instincts. The Chargers are interested in him at pick number 30. After these three it is a very lean draft at the Safety position.

Michael Griffin. I know he isn't "rated" as high as Landry is. But lets look at why. With a relatively weak texas defense in 2006, Griffin was forced to play shallow and defend the run (which he did very effectively). but it didn't allow him to show his cover skills because he was having to abandon the cover 2 in which he is the most effective. We all saw in 2005 just how good he is when he was playing free safety next to Michael Huff. And he is the best punt blocker to come through the system in a very long time, maybe ever. As much as we football fans like to hide behind numbers and sports commentators' opinions, you have to look at the players on the field and watch their effectiveness on the field in a variety of situations, and NOT just watch the highlight reels. Having done that. I say Griffin is definitely the top safety followed by Landry.

No way Landry makes it to 22, he's a sure fire top 10 pick, top 15 at worst.

after personally watching landry play for the last 4 yrs, i have yet to see another safety hit as hard as he does and his cover skills aren't that shabby either. i can't remember the safety from florida's name( i think mcneil) but after watching him play he is a great hitter too( don't know about cover skills) both remind me of ronnie lott in the way they destroy wide outs and qb's
