My grandparents have a 37 year old piano. It is beautiful but sounds bad. It hasnt been tuned in about 30 years. Is it fixable? How much would it cost to tune it? Will strings and hammers have to be replaced? We live in El Paso so its not very humid and there is little environmental changes except for temperature. Be honest!

It's not really possible to say how much it would cost since I've not seen it. It is, however, entirely possible to tune it. Again, there is no way to know how many hammers and strings would need to be replaced without seeing it. I'm guessing that it may not be as bad as you think. If the piano has just been sitting for awhile, and otherwise has been taken good care of, I would think that a basic tuning would do the trick. It's amazing how quickly a piano can get out of tune. I've played piano for many years, so I suggest calling a tuner in your area and getting an estimate. It's a shame to let a beautiful instrument go to waste!

OK, I'll be honest. Your piano can be saved, but you will have a tuner there more often than you may think. Once tuned (and any other work done) the tuner will have to return to tune it monthly for a few months, and expect some of the strings to pop on you because they are older and haven't Had the correct tension in quite some time. With regular maintenance, it is worth it, and you will enjoy your piano. A tuning is reasonable at about $100-150 each time. I have a guy who charges a hundred and then returns and tunes it again at no charge, but he is the exception (and he isn't in Texas). Just stay with the maintenance, even if it costs and even if it is more often than you would like. The piano will stabilize hopefully sooner rather than later.

To be honest that would be a question to ask a Piano tunor in your area. When we had a piano we had our's tuned every year when I wasn't playing and twice a year when I was playing. But I hear that when you want to start playing again that you do need to have your piano tuned.

You can call and ask a local piano tuner in your yellow pages and they will honestly tell you, that is how we found our Piano Tuner that we had for year's and come to find out he was the best one in town!

well you would have to tune it a few times to get it back in tune..try having your tuner come in every six months for a few years and it should be sounding great soon!!
