If you could pick, would you rather keep Michael Gambon as Dumbledore or have Ian McKellen (aka Gandolf) in the role?
Sorry! I think Gambon, though good, is a little too aggressive as Dumbledore.

I saw the first Harry Potter movie before I read any of the books, so Richard Harris will ALWAYS be the perfection of Dumbledore for me.

As for the Gambon/McKellen debate, I really think there's too much typecasting involved with McKellen. To me he is, and forever will be, Gandalf. If he were to take over the role of Dumbledore, I'd be expecting him to mistake Harry for Peregrin Took :-P

As for Gambon's past representations of Hogwarts' beloved headmaster, I too was taken a bit by surprise at how aggressive he was. But at the same time, like someone said before me, the story is getting darker, and it's time for the characters to become more serious.

One thing I DO like about Gambon's performance is that he portrays more of the quirky side of Dumbledore that I so admire in the novels.

I say leave Micahel Gambon in the role. Besides, I'd have some issues once the sixth movie comes around and I had to watch Alan Rickman kill Richard Harris (were he still alive, of course) or Ian McKellen.

I would love for McKellen to be Dumbledore, Gambon just doesn't fit for me... the scene in GOF where he storms down the stairs and yells at Harry was way over the top.
Heck if I really had a choice Richard Harris would still be alive, he was perfect =)

but Mckellen will not take the roll, he has said so himself.

I know Ian McKellen would be amazing as Dumbledore, but I would keep thinking of Gandalf. It would be too hard for me to keep the characters separate because of the beard and the hair. Gambon is pretty good though. I think his agressiveness is appropriate as the books keep getting more and more intense. Tough choice though.

I believed it should have been Ian McKellan from the beginning. That's who I pictured. You are right about Gambon. He is aggresive. Dumbledore is very softspoken and Gambon is playing him rather harsh. To me, Gandalf is the perfect Dumbledore and was probably the influence for him in the first place. But, what can we do but plunk down our $10 and see the next movie and wait for our pre-orders of book 7. We'll still love it. :P

Ian McKellen.
He's the MAN!!!!
He would be great for that role, since he did such a fantastic job as Gandalf the gray. He's seems like someone you can trust and he seems more approachable.
He seems more compassionate and understanding.

I'd prefer McKellen.

Actually, I'd prefer if Richard Harris hadn't gone and died - he was perfect as Dumbledore!

McKellen. He was awesome as Gandalf, and Gambon made Dumbledore a FREAK.
