Summertime" is the name of an aria George Gershwin composed for the opera Porgy and Bess. The lyrics were written by DuBose Heyward and Ira Gershwin. A popular jazz standard, the song is in the Aeolian mode.
It is said that Gershwin was attempting to
create his own spiritual in the style of the African American folk song. The song is sung several times throughout the opera.
