If it is not an assignment, STOP READING IT. There are literally thousands of books published each year. Don't waste your time.

If it is an assignment, write down what you don't like or what could have been better as you read. You'll have to talk about it or write about it, and these notes will help. When you criticize books, it's ok not to like them. That's what criticism is.

Does it need more action, are the characters unbelievable, does the prose not "flow"? All legitimate criticism.

Don't forget to remember the important details for the test, though.

If it's one of "those books" that everyone's read or that your best friend/relative/etcetera is badgering you to read, try going a little farther. If it stays boring, put it down, write the title somewhere, and come back to it eventually. True story: Three years went by between the time I picked up "Lord of the Rings" and nearly immediately deemed it boring, and the time that I finished it. Now it's my favorite book. So you never know, a book that's boring now might not be boring in a month...or a year...or three.

If it's an assignment, find a friend to commiserate with, but just get through it. I did this with "Great Expectations", which wasn't exactly boring...I just hated the narrator after a while.

If you're reading it for a class or something, you just have to force yourself to do it. A lot of books I read are boring but enjoyable/worthy at the same time.

A lot of the time, a book stays boring only for the beginning. if it CONTINUES to be tedious... give yourself goals...say, I'll finish two chapters today. Anyway, if you finish it, you can say that you read such and such book with pride.

Have fun by commiserating with yourself about how boring it is. Or just try to enjoy it on a "so bad it's good" level.
