It depends where the word is used. In the French West Indies, we are Creoles, we speak Creole without necessarily being 1/4 ..., 2/4.... We're just creole because of the new culture which sprung out the meeting of the French, Africans, Spaniards, English and Amerindians.

A creole ( or crellollo, in correct Spanish) is actually a person born in the Americas ( the New World) to European parents who were born in Europe. These European born people were called peninsulares. It was a social class system that spaniards used when they conquered the Americas.
