Am applying for a job which asks for 3 professional references. I was self employed and also worked for family for a while, and to my understanding family can't be used for a reference. The other place where I worked was over 3 yrs ago and that supervisor has left. Who can I use for a reference, I do volunteer work would those supervisors count, also what about a pastor from my church? Any info is appreciated and thanks!

Volunteer leaders or supervisors can be great references. I lead many volunteer projects, and I have personally provided references for many of my volunteers for employment and various other academic reasons. For example, I have written letters of recommendation for a couple of people that were applying for jobs tutoring children, based upon their work at a volunteer project involving the same.

Another thing to do would be to try business partners, clients, and other affiliated people with your business. Even with a family-owned business, there were probably other people that you interacted with on a regular basis. Remember to keep it applicable to the job function.

Pastors and church affiliations are character references, but not necessarily professional references, unless you can tie them to the job function which you are applying.

Good luck!

Yes, use your pastor who would at least be a character reference, if not a work reference. Also volunteer supervisors and any teachers or instructors you have had who have gotten to know you and your work.

Family can be used, it's just not as reliable and frowned upon.

Your volunteer work supervisors are definitely good ones as is your pastor.

Do you do have any personal business contacts that you could use as a reference?
