I really don't know where how people manage to get all these viruses....I picked up a few trojans a couple years back while on my campus lan but since I moved off that network I've never had any problems. I haven't had a virus since freshman year in the dorm and since I got away from internet explorer and moved to opera the spyware has gone away as well.

I don't run any anti-virus or a firewall and on average I download anywhere between 1-20 gigs a week off the dc++ network (lots of dvd's - lol)...I get all kinds of movies, software, games for every platform and just about every cd that comes out and I just don't see any of the viruses people talk about. I stay away from limewire and the torrents and run dc++ exclusively for the file sharing and no probs yet.

I would agree that McAfee is not necessarily important to protect your computer but some form of antivirus software is (and also antispyware software).

Look at it this way: the only way you can even somewhat guarantee that your computer is protected is if it's not connected to the internet and turned off. People are always finding newer and scarier ways to exploit operating systems and other pieces of software on your computer. Better to spend ~$50 on some antivirus software then to have to fix your computer yourself, spend money to fix your computer or even worse be a victim of identity theft.

Not necessarily McAfee but a virus guard is very much necessary for any computer today. You can chose a different brand if you like.

It is definitely important to have protection on your computer! But unfortunately there are holes in these programs that still allow hackers, viruses and so on into your system I have used all of these 'name brand' and for years trusted Norton as my protection..but still downloaded AVG as a backup, because it was so highly 'recommended'. Well, I was offered a free test that showed me with running these two programs...Norton and AVG...I had over 70 hackers on my computer still! What a let down!
The best protection is one that you can count on....and I do have that now with Invisus Direct!
