Do you think I was born yesterday?

Obviously you weren't. And you're not actually asking for an answer, you're trying to make the point that you aren't letting someone make a fool of you by telling you an obvious lie. You don't have the blatant lack of intelligence of a baby that it would take to believe their B.S.

Its when you don't expect a direct answer.
Ex: Why don't you turn on the TV?
You expect the person to turn on the TV, not tell you "I don't turn on the TV because..." although it would be a direct answer in the grammatical form of the question.
