Why don't you get off of Yahoo Answers and take your baby to a doctor.

all of that sound perfactly normal. You can look up developmental milestones, and check your baby's progress to those if you are really concerned. there are also child-find programs that screen from infancy and are provided by the state. If your child were to have delays you would be eligible for services.Without knowing what state you are in, I don't know where to point you exactly but usually they are provided through the school system or health and hospitals. Most likley everything is fine, and your baby will develop right on target. I wouldn't worry over laughter and heathy sleep.

Don't worry, this is all normal. Babies smile and laugh in their sleep all the time. The eye fluttering is REM sleep, a necessary component for healthy sleep cycles! And my baby screams like the world is ending and then starts smiling and cooing the next minute. You can ask the doctor, but don't make a special appointment for these things, they are fine!

Man, those are the sweetest things....it's totally normal. My husband and I just sit and watch them sleep so we can laugh at their little antics.
Mental retardation would be something you'd figure out later, if developmental states are delayed. You'd look at sitting up, rolling over, reaction to sounds, etc.
Enjoy your baby, it's so hard to do so as a first time mom because you worry so much. He's a blessing for you!

Please get a book on child development. It's important to know what to expect and what is normal.
Nothing you described here indicates a mental handicap. Babies laugh and flutter their eyes in sleep because they are dreaming. Babies fuss and then get over it sometimes.
If you have no experience with babies ask friends and family who are parents. Try to find a network of Mom's so you can use them as a sounding board for concerns.
Never be afraid to ask your doctor about your concerns.

No, he's not retarted. Newborns do weird things sometimes. Being a first time mother you are probably just being paranoind and worried, but that's normal. Does he have a big head? I know that babies with down syndrome have big heads. If you are that worried go to the doctors to get a peace of mind.

The following red flags may indicate a child is at risk for atypical development, and is in need of an immediate evaluation.
In clinical terms, there are a few “absolute indicators,” often referred to as “red flags,” that indicate that a child should be evaluated. For a parent, these are the “red flags” that your child should be screened to ensure that he/she is on the right developmental path.
Social/Communication Red Flags:
If your baby shows any of these signs, please ask your pediatrician or family practitioner for an immediate evaluation:
No big smiles or other warm, joyful expressions by six months or thereafter
No back-and-forth sharing of sounds, smiles, or other facial expressions by nine months or thereafter
No babbling by 12 months
No back-and-forth gestures, such as pointing, showing, reaching, or waving by 12 months
No words by 16 months
No two-word meaningful phrases (without imitating or repeating) by 24 months
Any loss of speech or babbling or social skills at any age

You little one sounds perfectly normal. My son did the exact same thing. He actually would laugh in his sleep before he knew how to laugh when he was awake. It was sweet. And I understand your worry. I worried my son was deaf, had autitsim, and lost of other things. But the older he gets the less "wierd" things he does to make me worry and I can see how perfectly he is developing. Your son sounds like all other little babies. You are a good mom by asking though.

Oh, stop it.
The eye flutters are because he's DREAMING, and the laughing could be the same thing. It doesn't mean there's anything wrong with him. It means his brain is working! As for the crying, who knows? Maybe he's got a gas bubble that's making him uncomfortable, and when it passes he stops crying. Or maybe he just likes to hear you jump out of the chair and run to his side, sort of like "ha ha, gotcha mom."
Calm down, and just enjoy him and all his little quirks. He's okay, and so are you.

Don't worry. He doesn't have any problems. These are perfectly normal for newborns. My son did all those things. Plus, he'd roll his eyes back into his head when he breast fed or was rocked. It freaked me out!! Until I learned it was all normal. One time I was so scared I screamed at him and really thought he was dying.
My son is now 12 months and his meeting all his milestones with gusto. He talks, laughs, plays and just started walking/climbing!!
He really is fine :))) Your a really great mommy to be so concerned about him!
