What are the pros and cons of increasing jail time for the possession of a gun?

In Canada, the current jail time for possesing a gun is 5 years.

What do you think will be the pros and cons of increasing the time from 5 to 10 years?

I am not familiar with Canada's gun laws. But in Australia, they made it illegal to own a gun and gun crime went UP. UP, they had MORE gun crime.
I assume you are saying that the mere possession of a gun in Canada will get you 5 years in jail. Good reason to stay away from Canada.
In VA, we have a much more reasonable gun law. If you commit a crime and have a gun, or you steal a gun, or commit any kind of gun crime, then the minimum sentence is 5 years. I think the way that works is that if the crime carries a sentence of 5 years and you use a gun, then you get another 5 years for a total of 10 years. After all, the Second Amendment is for law abiding citizens, not criminals.

If your are talking about CRIMINAL possession of a gun, then yes increasing jail time would be a good thing. The NRA has pushed for tougher punishments for using a gun to commit a crime but whinny liberals have always fought it saying that the poor criminals are just misunderstood products of their environments and if we'd just get rid of the guns they would all become good boys and girls.
