Any Oiler fan knows that Kevin Lowe has the Oilers in his blood and while this trade may seem shocking to some, Lowe received much much more than the Islanders. To get a Pronger type player you either draft or trade and now the Oilers have a great pool of young talent to offer. Smyth will thrive in Long Island. Ted Nolan is doing coach of the year work and Ryan will enjoy the next few months. Wouldn't surprise me for Lowe to do an old Sam Pollack with Montreal type deal and re-sign Smyth over the summer. If, Lowe had lost Smyth and got nothing, then you can blame Lowe. Seems to me to be a win/win for both teams. Have a great playoff Ryan. GO OILERS

Smyth was definetley the heart and soul of the franchise - but offering him a 5 year contract over 27Mio and then him turning it down. Let's stay reasnable here. He will be 36 by then, most likely a bit less productive by then and might even be behind alex Hemsky - so why should we pay so much money ? Granted, he did a awesome job in the past and will do so in the future for a few years... but 5.... can we afford to overpay in a market where the salary cap will go up again next season. Overpay for a player like Smyth ? Don't get me wrong, I am as upset as anybody about the trade, but none of us is in Lowe's shoes so none of us should blame him for trying to get ready for next season after this one got botchered anyway. Let's see what happens with the free agents and in the meantime let's keep supporting the team. We are suppose to support them in shacky times too, not only when they make a cup run

I'm sure any Islanders fan is.. But people in Edmonton must be crushed. I'm a Dallas Stars fan, and I'm very disappointed they couldn't come to terms with him. It's hard to picture him in any other uniform. What a sad day in Edmonton, and on the night Mark Messier's number was retired to boot. How bittersweet. I wish him the best.. Fortunately I got a chance to meet him a couple times when the Oilers were in town to play the Stars. He's a nice man, and I can't imagine how bad this hurts him to leave. So my answer to your question is, "No."

Being an Islanders fan, I'm very happy with the trade!
For all the criticism he took, Garth Snow seems to be doing a pretty good job as GM!

It's stupid. Why would any GM bother to trade the heart of their team? It's actually sad to see how Edmonton's been falling apart this season after Pronger and several others left during the off-season.
Smyth even had a hard time leaving the airport. Yes, he cried.

I think many people are upset over it, for many different reasons.
Personally I think that they called his bluff and Now he is gone, and he won't back. He had said he would not resign with them at a "home town discount" well guess what, his whole crying thing at the air port, please, he knew they could not afford more, and if he really wanted to stay, because that is where his heart his, he would of sing. I mean we are talking about about a few hundred thousand dollars difference. What is the problem, he can't live off the millions he already has.
To bad for him. Like I said, they called his bluff, Now he is gone, weather you like it or not, he chose his wallet over his city.
