What is there about the short story "The Story of an Hour" by Kate Chopin that kept it out of high school textbooks for so long? We have this question for English and I can't really figure it out. "Any 'ideas' that would be considered too adult for high-school but nothing sexual" is what our teacher said.

for quite some time, it was unthinkable for a woman to live without the assistance of a man. thats the way many people thought during those days and people think now too. if you are asking the question, i am assuming you have read the story. the woman is overwhelmed with a newfound sense of freedom and when she finds out its going to be taken away just as quickly as it came, it is unbearable. freedom and free thinking for all is an idea many can't accept.

Basically it is the story of a repressed woman who is repressed by her husband. Since marriage is basic to society, and this denegrates it badly, maybe some parents don't want you to read it. This is a book I would save until you are older and less impressionable, so it does not ruin your concept about marriage.
