there is only one way to add oxygen to your tank- it comes in from the top of the water, so you have to keep the water on the top moving.
an air pump- or an outside power filter. the last is best- because it does double duty, moving surface water and cleaning.

sounds like you should do some research on your tank. If you are talking about smaller tropical fish then general rule is 1 inch of fish per gallon of water. Larger fish and goldfish need even more space than that. If your problem is that your tank is over-stocked, then putting more oxygen in your tank really won't help.

Not much of an answer as to what oxygen is I know, but really I don't think thats your problem anyway. To improve the oxygen levels you can get an air pump and an air stone for the tank if you don't already have one, but again, if your tank has too many fish in it it isn't going to help much.

Good Luck

The fish tank water needs to be changed, to accommodate your fish.

One gallon of water can keep a single gold fish happy for a week, but then it has to be changed so the fish gets a new supply of oxygen which it extracts from passing water through its gills and separating the oxygen molecules from the water.

Fish get their air from the water and water loses the Oxygen in a small tank because use the Oxygen and the water becomes stagnate, not like a flowing creek or river.

Stagnate and in a one gallon or a six hundred gallon tank the oxygen the fish gets from the water can be gone in a short time if the number of fish is greater then the waters capacity to give them fresh oxygen.

Fish tanks water needs to be changed if you do not have a oxygen recharger for it and filters to clean the fish poop and algae out. Snail are good algae eaters, but the rest has to be done by you, routinely, or the fish die.

What they were telling you was like this. Say you have one person in a closet. You would have enough oxygen (air) to live for a long time because one person doesn't breathe much air. But, if you put 20 people in a closet, all of you would start having a hard time breathing in not a very long time at all because all of you would be breathing up all of the air. No one would have any air left and then all of you would be pushing and shoving each other to try to get more air by, maybe, trying to breath from the crack under the door but, eventually, all of you wouldn't be able to get enough air from breathing under the door and so you would each slowly start to die. But, if someone put an air hose in the closet, you all could still live. So, this is what the people were trying to tell you about your fish. Water has oxygen (air) in it too. Even though fish live in water, they need to breath the oxygen that is in the water. If there are too many fish in the water, they breathe up all of the oxygen in the water and, eventually, they all start to suffocate because they can't get enough air and then they try to breath the air from the top of the water just like you were trying to breathe under the door, but this still isn't enough for everyone, so they will slowly start to die. So, the more oxygen (air) you put in the water by pumping it in, plus, not overcrowding your tank with too many fish, the better your fish will live.

Oxygen in a tank is like oxygen in a room...

If too many people in a poor ventilated room they will suffocate, same thing apply to the fish tank.

You may reduce the population of the fish, get a bigger tank, or add extra air pump to the tank to make the rate of oxygen dissolve in water faster.

The air pump is same is the ventilated fan for the room...

Oxygen is an element. Number 8 on the periodic table in fact. It is required for life as we know it. It's what your body needs when you breathe in and what fish get from the water through their gills. If you have too many fish tey can actually need more oxygen than the water can hold and sufficate.

Fish breath the air out of the water.. If you have more fish than fresh aerated water, then the water is stagnant and they can't get enough oxygen out of it to survive. You need something to keep the water moving and add bubbles, keep the water moving and fresh.

i'll keep it simple.... for every 1 inch of fish in a tank you need 1 gallon of water. can't crowd them or they can't breath.... oxygen. and your fish will be happier and healthier with more room to swim around in.
